Caring for Leather Boots
So, you’ve tracked down the perfect pair of
boots. They look fantastic and fit like a glove. You want to wear them all day, every day. But, if you do, they’re
going to be put through every kind of punishment the elements can throw at them. How do you keep them looking in A1
condition?
The wonderful thing about leather is that, as
it ages, it develops its own patina. With proper care,
age only adds to its beauty. Leather is natural;
organic. It moulds to your contours and fits like a
second skin. But just as we need a skin care regime to
keep our own skin in tip top condition, so do we need to take good care of our leather.

We all polish our footwear from time to time.
This way we buff out any scuffs and get them to shine. Actually, when we use polish on our footwear, we’re actually
performing a much more important and far less obvious function. Polishing is not just cosmetic. One of the greatest
enemies to leather is water. That wrong step can lead to permanent watermarks. Obviously, we’re not going to be
jumping through puddles in our Jimmy Choos, but on a rainy day, some degree of expose to water realistically can’t
be avoided. By polishing our leather boots, we’re applying a waterproof coating to shield them from the elements.
They’ll also be less inclined to scuff. Prevention is better than cure.
If you want to make your boots as watertight
as possible, you should invest in a good leather conditioner. It is surprisingly inexpensive and a great investment – extending
the lifespan of your boots. It is a clear material
containing natural waxes and oils. Like our own skin,
leather can dry out and crack over time. It needs its
own special moisturiser. A coating of leather
conditioner followed up with a colour polish and a good buff doesn’t take long. A little TLC will restore the beauty of your leather, adding a
protective film to keep it that way.

Some types of leather need specialist care.
Obviously we have to be very careful with suede – no polishes and conditioners here – we need to use products
specifically designed for use with suede. Similarly, conditioner and coloured polishes should never be used with
patent leather. All that is really required here is a wipe over with a damp cloth, gently rubbing to remove any
surface marks, then a buff with a soft, dry cloth to restore shine. Be sure you use a very soft cloth – a duster is
ideal.
Another factor to consider in caring for your
boots is how they are going to be stored. Boot trees
are excellent to keep them in shape. These devices
slip into your boots for storage and keeps them taught and in shape to prevent them sagging and
creasing. Leather doesn’t respond well to extremes in
temperature. Too hot and drying out and cracking can
occur; too cold and damp and mould can get in. To keep
your leather boots in tip top condition, it’s great to keep them either in their box, or wrapped in a colourless,
natural fibre – a white cotton pillowcase is ideal.
This keeps the dust off your footwear whilst allowing the leather to “breathe”. We are delighted to bring you a hand picked range of boots
